Running for Public Office

Public office is a position created by a constitution or legislative act that has a defined term and involves the authority to perform governmental functions. These positions can be filled through elections or appointments and play a crucial role in the functioning of government.

Running for public office requires a large commitment. You will be challenged socially, emotionally, and financially. The campaign season is grueling and is a significant burden on the candidate, your family, and friends. However there is no greater calling to public service than being a a representative of the people. Holding a public office enables you to have a great impact on the community and government.

Candidates for office must meet certain qualifications and are required to file specific ballot access documents in order to qualify to appear on the ballot. These qualifications and requirements may vary slightly depending on the type of office sought (federal, statewide, General Assembly, or local) and type of candidate (party primary, party non-primary, or independent). You must be a resident of the district the office represents.

The Role of the Democratic Committee

If you are interested in becoming a candidate, we highly encourage you to contrat the Roanoke County Democratic Committee. If your campaign values align with the Democratic Party, we will guide you through the process to obtain the official party nomination.

It should be noticed however that the Roanoke County Democratic Committee alone is not sufficient to run a campaign. You must be prepared to provide your own resources to run your campaign. Running for public office is an involved process that includes paperwork, collecting signatures, entering a primary, entering the general election, volunteer recruitment, voter outreach, messaging, canvassing, fundraising, social media, etc. Filing paperwork is simply the first and easiest step.
